REIKI FOR CHILDREN?

Of course, we give Reiki sessions to children as well,

who respond especially well and fast to this wonderful and deeply relaxing energy.

We also provide Reiki training to children but only in separate classes...

each child gets their own Reiki-Kid manual which has been specially developed by Barbara Mckell from Canada.

Reiki Kids are Highly Sensitive by Maureen Healy

Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven -Henry Ward Beecher

Our children are being born more sensitive than ever.

They hate scratchy clothing, mean words and loud noises. Scientists estimate that between 15–20 % of children today are born with high sensitivity, although my experience tells me that it’s much higher. Of course, the challenge comes when their gentle nature rubs up against our sometimes not-so-sensitive world. So what can they do? Well, you may have guessed it—they can receive and learn Reiki.

How Reiki Helps SensitivityLauren, aged twelve, said: “Reiki helps me feel tired” and that’s true. She had trouble sleeping and feeling relaxed before she got Reiki treatments.

Marco, aged nine, told me: “I love helping with Reiki.” Marco is the “go to” person on his block in Los Angeles for fixing headaches and tummy problems.

Alessandro, aged 8, told me: “I want to give back some Reiki to my Mom. Can you teach me too?”

Sensitive boys or girls giving or getting Reiki, experience growth in very specific and important life skills:

Self-Confidence – When sensitive boys and girls participate in giving someone Reiki it shows that they have tangible skills. Whereas some children might demonstrate their skills through a display of their soccer trophies, these children have a crystal collection and Reiki certification to show their attainments . It makes the invisible very visible, so they feel empowered on their path. Receiving Reiki is also a confirmation for them that the power to heal is within all of us.

Calmness – Reiki helps sensitive children become calmer, especially when our world feels hectic and overwhelming. As in Lauren’s situation, it’s very practical to use Reiki to help someone sleep or feel more relaxed in high-stress situations (i.e. test-taking, performing, sporting events).

Centeredness – Sensitive children feel more deeply and are quick to respond. So by building up a practice of Reiki (receiving or giving), they learn how to access their center and take a “sacred pause” before acting. Emma told me, “I love Reiki. It helps me feel OK when I used to cry,” and I couldn’t have said it better.

Connection (to self and others) – Connecting with others in the Reiki world empowers sensitive children and helps them find their way. Althea, aged thirteen, told me: “I love, love, love coming to your classes and making new friends.” I teach a Reiki class at which a large group of intuitive kids come together, and they always laugh as well as make friends (it’s that birds of a feather idea).

Spirituality – Sensitive boys and girls tend to believe in something greater whether it’s God or Nature. By becoming familiar with Reiki, they can begin to rely on the fact that “something greater” is in and around their lives helping them. One of my students, Noah, said: “God is in these crystals” and then we put Reiki into the crystals. It is the beginning of a spiritual practice.

On the Path

Highly sensitive children are learning how to become strong from the inside out, and Reiki helps them on their way. Of course, it isn’t the only way to help these intuitive and perceptive children, but it does strengthen their growing sense of self-confidence and resilience and ultimately, their ability to create true happiness.

Teaching Reiki to Children   by Barbara Mckell from Canada

This is an excerpt from an article of the Reiki News magazine.

Teaching Reiki to children has been such a gift, for it is actually the children who are teaching me.  Their openness and willingness to explore their innate abilities makes each class special and unique.

I share so much laughter, creativity and fun with these children.

They have taught me what childhood should be like and how to help manifest it.

A ten-year-old girl named Claire inspired me to create a program specifically for children.

Her parents, Elizabeth and Scott, had taken Level I Reiki with me.

A few days after their course, they called me saying they really needed to talk to me.

They spoke to me from separate extension phones and told me what had transpired

in their home after the Reiki I workshop.

Elizabeth's mother had been looking after her two children for the duration of the workshop.

When Elizabeth and her husband arrived home, her mother had said,"I don't care what you learned this weekend, my knee is hurting so bad I need you to try it on me."

Elizabeth was a little apprehensive about her newly acquired skill, but she remembered how she could really feel the energy when she created an energy ball between her two hands.

She did this just to make sure the energy was running, and as she began to feel the energy between her hands, Claire said, "Oh Mommy, can you show me how to make one of those beautiful balls of color, too?" Her mother showed her what to do, and Claire could quite easily see the energy and talked about the different colors she was seeing.

She helped her mother do Reiki on her grandmother, careful to keep her hands above

the area being treated so that she could still see all the colors.

It was through my conversations with Claire's mother that I realized

I needed to create something for special ones like Claire.

I couldn't accept that she had to wait until she was an adult to learn Reiki.

From my own experience, I knew that many children shut down these special abilities

because they feel they have no use for them in their physical world.

I knew that Reiki would give them an outlet and a practical way to use their perceptions.

As Reiki practitioners, we all know how simple Reiki is and that it is neither dependent on spiritual evolution nor intellect, so why should it be kept from someone based on an age barrier?

I was also encouraged by some of my Reiki students who told me that

if I set up a class for kids they would provide me with willing participants.

Reiki Kids by Barbara Mckell from Canada

When I created the first Reiki Kids program, I sought the advice of experts.

One of my colleagues, Alison Normore, holds a Ph.D. in Childhood Education.

She has spent many years working in child development and program evaluation,

so she became a valuable resource.

She also had her Level II Reiki and wanted to support my project.

Another woman who I called in as a resource was Heidi Klaming.

She was a teacher and had spent many years teaching creative arts to children.

Heidi had been practicing Reiki since the early nineties and was a Reiki Master.

Both Alison and Heidi wanted to be part of the first program and were an immense help to me when we put our creative minds together.

We decided that we wanted to direct the program to children aged

between six and twelve years, and soon the first Reiki Kids program was in the works.

I wanted a place that wouldn't restrict the children in any way.

A small retreat center where I often teach my Reiki Master classes was rented for the first workshop.

There was plenty of room for the children both indoors and out.

The wood plank floor would make it easy to clean up any of their creative endeavors,

and the furniture was well worn and comfortable. . .

The Reiki Attunement for Children

by Barbara Mckell from Canada

I find it easiest to do individual Reiki attunements with children.

While I am doing each attunement, helpers keep the other children busy with various art projects.

A special room for the attunement is setup with soft music and candles.

I smudge the room and prepare the space with Reiki symbols.

This makes it very special, and the children really respond to this welcoming environment.

If any child is unsure or nervous, they can have mom with them.

I have even done an attunement to a child sitting on mom's knee.

I recommend that you do just the one (four-step) attunement.

I have a sense that is all children require.

I use the one-attunement method taught to me by William Rand and find it to be highly effective.

The attunements themselves can be an interesting experience,

and I have learned to be very flexible in honoring each child's uniqueness.

Occasionally a child does not wish to receive the attunement.

This is rare, but this too must be honored.

I just let the child know that if they ever change their minds,

they can come and see me for their own special attunement day.

Sometimes they just aren't ready to sit still, and I honor that as well.

Intent is the most important element of the attunement, so I have learnt to adapt.

Most children will sit very respectfully in the prayer position and receive the attunement.

Amazing and beautiful things will happen when you attune children.

One seven-year-old boy named Addison sat so respectfully during the attunement,

it was obvious that this was a very sacred moment for him.

As I did the attunement, I could sense and see all his chakras line up in micro movements.

His field was changing and filling with light.

At the end of the attunement, I instructed him to put his hands over his heart and

allow the Reiki energy to flow.

He did this and sat very quietly for a moment.

Then he looked at me with the most loving expression and said,

"My heart has changed its beat."

He continued to sit there for a little longer then turned his gaze towards me again and said,

"There, it is finished. My heart is beating differently now."

I asked him if it felt like a good thing.

With a dreamy look in his eyes he said, "Oh, yes. It is very good.

"Then he went off to join the other children.

When his mother contacted me later, she told me he had spent the week after the workshop

in a state of bliss, experiencing the world around in him in a very loving way.

11 and 12 March 2011 : free Reiki training to 24 students

at the Baan Doi Foundation in Maesai, at the Thai Burmese border...

11 kids and 13 adults

I just came back from a 3-day trip, visiting a wonderful project in Maesai
on the northernmost Thai city located at the Myanmar (Burma) border,
where Barbara and her friend Graziella founded the Baan Doi Foundation
to take care of children with HIV/AIDS.

I gave free Reiki-1 training in Thai to 23 students over 2 days:
11 of the children (including one baby),

10 of their caretakers and grandma's
+ a Reiki attunement to
Graziella : Teacher level
Barbara, Martin and  Hanna : Master level
Sarah : Reiki-1
and two more visiting volonteers for the Reiki -1 level.

My main objective was to enable the children to take care of themselves...

Started by training the adults on Friday afternoon (while the kids were still in school)

and with the children on Saturday morning.
After talking a bit to all of them in group,
I gave a Reiki-1 attunement to each child in a separate room
where we had lit a beautiful candle and where I showed each personally
how to take care of themselves, as their first priority.

I was told that after their attunement, each kid went to their room for some private time.
Wonnnnnnnderful how they received and perceived the Reiki connection.

We also gave a Soroptimist donation of 5000 Baht
to support the education of 9 year old Nong Biu,
who was born in prison from an HIV/AIDS Mom who died.
President Hanna decided to give another Soroptimist scholarship of 5000 Baht per year
for the next 6 years to another child. Total 30,000 Baht or 750 Euro's.
And, as she stopped smoking recently,
she will donate her monthly cigarette money of 3000 Baht to this wonderful foundation.
This is such a great motivation to stop smoking.

For me, it was a precious experience to work with these wonderful people and their kids.

We had a lot of fun and the Thai Reiki training manual for kids plus one small box of colouring
pencils (which Hanna had bought for each) were very useful tools to keep the kids occupied

while I gave each of them their attunement.

As this project is still "borrowing" electricity from their neighbours,
we also donated one great ABO solar light which Martin installed immediately
outside the kid's dormitory so that they do not have to be afraid from the dark anymore
when they need to use the common outdoors toilets at night.

You will find some pictures of this training below this text.

Last weekend (on 5 March 2011), I gave free Reiki-1 training to 8 cancer patients

at the Cancer Hostel in Chiangmai where underprivileged Thais can stay for free

while undergoing chemo or radiation therapy at Chiangmai hospital.

We had such fun going over the Reiki principles....
especially saying "Just for today, I will not get angry"
and "Just for today, I will not worry" seemed to make the cancer patients laugh a lot!
